It seems like every few months I get a wild hair to start developing
games. Sometimes it pops up and I start writing code prototypes.
Sometimes, I feel like doing some pixel art. Either way, I never seem to
stick to it, and I get distracted by the next shiny thing.
It
hasn't always been like this, though. Back when Palm Pilots were big,
and I was young, I made and sold a few games. It was more of a niche
market back then, instead of the huge market for iPhone and Android
games nowadays, and creating something unique was easy because there
simply wasn't as much development for the platforms. After doing that
for awhile, I got a web development job, and making games kind of faded
into a hobby that I would pick up every now and then, and then seemed to
 falter and stop altogether.
And that's how it's been
now, for me, for quite a few years. Until a few weeks months ago, when
there was a game development contest for the OpenPandora device. That
got me pumped, and I started working on simple prototypes, and built one
of them up into almost a game. I lost focus over the course of the
three months, however, and ended up not finishing it.
Then,
I discovered the Ludum Dare. I had heard about it before, but from the
side of a game player, and not a game developer. Looking into it more, I
got pumped up about it, and decided to give it a go. I devoted my
weekend to it, and ended up finally releasing a game after not doing so
for over seven years.
So now with that under my belt,
I'm ready to release another game. I still need to decide what kind of
game to make, but I'm sure I will be using Love2d at the core, at least
for prototyping. I may decide that I really like the concept and switch
gears to rewrite the prototype in C++ and port it to the OpenPandora. No
matter what, though, I plan on having fun. Good luck to everyone!
